Toughened or tempered glass is a safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the interior into tension. Such stresses cause the glass, when broken, to crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards as plate glass (a.k.a. annealed glass) does. The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury.
STYLES & OPTIONS
Our account specialists are experts in supporting your glass specification, pricing and contracts for bespoke glass products.
Toughened glass is used in the majority of balustrade installations whether as a monolithic product or in a laminated version. Its thickness is determined by the location and its use, as required by the project.
Available in
different colours and finishes.
Extremely strong when used in its correct format.
As a single glazed product toughened glass can be used with stainless steel post and rail systems. Generally, it is supplied 10mm thick for domestic applications and 12mm thick for commercial projects. As a commercial system glazed into a channel with a bolt through handrail 19mm is used in single glazed format.
CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) machines in the glass trade create a quality that is unsurpassed. Spectrum Glass’ investment in an Intermac CNC has proven to be one of its finest decisions. Intermac are known as the World leaders in CNC machinery and the quality and precision in the end product is unrivalled.
Quick, accurate cutting from CAD
(Computer Aided Design) files, essential for toughened laminates where both
panels must be the exact same size.
CNC can scan templates eliminating
human error.
Repeat projects do not need to be re
programmed.
CNC cutting polishing is normally used where standard straight-line edging isn’t precise enough. Possibly curved edges and shapes are required, or cut outs for glass door hinges. Specialist diamond routers and polishing heads create an accuracy to less than 1mm.
Painted glass splashbacks are available
in many different colours and finishes. From RAL, Dulux to Farrow and Ball.
Spectrum Glass can mix and supply samples to match most codes given within
these ranges.
Rainbow or silver glitter, or bronze and gold quartz, to name but
a few, can be added to any colour chosen. All our paint is mixed and sprayed in
house in our 7-metre wide spray booth.
Easy to install using our Splashback installation adhesive.
Shaped panels with cut outs can be manufactured on our CNC from templates or CAD diagrams.
Over 20,000 colours can be achieved from our range of base colours.
Our splashbacks can be used instead of
tiling for kitchen wall or bathrooms. Creating an easy to clean and uncluttered
finish.
No more whitening your tile grout after a few years.
With the advent of planning request requiring to go below ground where floor space is limited, more developments are now making the use of natural light by using walk-on glass floors. Made up of 3 or more layers of toughened and annealed glass of various thickness, the floors are capable of taking varying weights dependant on the location and type of building.
High strength values due to the glass
thicknesses.
Allows light into previously darkened
areas.
Can be sandblasted for privacy.
Glass floors are especially suited to areas above a low light area such as a basement office or a darkened corridor. Where the room above has an abundance of natural light this can then be passed to the lower floor.
